Adarsh Man Sherchan is a wildlife genetics program manager at The Centre for Molecular Dynamics, Nepal. An alumnus of RMIT University, Melbourne, Sherchan got into books from an early age. The Post’s Marissa Taylor caught up with Sherchan to talk about his love for books. Excerpts:
How did you first come to love books?
My father, a voracious reader himself, had this old bookshelf full of volumes from world literature that included titles by Chekov and Tagore to Devkota and Bhupi Sherchan. I grew up reading all these writers. However, it had to be reading The Catcher in the Rye that instilled into me this life-long love for books. I also attribute my love for words to the music I listen to. The lyrics of songs in the album Ten by Pearl Jam made me further appreciate words. That’s how my love affair with words started.
What was the last book you read and how did you like it?
It was Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs. I liked how it traces Jobs’ personality and his life pretty accurately.
I enjoyed Isaacson’s obsession on fine calliAgraphy and minimalism, also his well-documented obsession with perfectionism. It made me strive for perfection however, the inspiration comes too few and too far between for me.
Which book do you want to read next and why?
Ten years ago, upon the advice of a really close friend, I read 10 pages of Atlas Shrugged, written by Ayn Rand, but later I gave up on it as it was way too heavy for me then. Now, I am ready to read it again; it is one of those books which challenged a lot of postmodern theories that were well ahead of its times.
What is your favourite genre and why?
I am fond of non-fictional social commentary. I believe that honest journalism has the power to change the status quo of any society. Reading pieces written on personalities such as Dr King, Harvey Milk, Gandhi or Ruben Hurricane Carter have greatly influenced me.
Name a book that you would or would not recommend, and why?
Freedom at Midnight, written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, is one book that I would like to recommend. The book is about the Indian Independence Movement, which was one of history’s most compelling moments of human revolution against oppression. We are at similar forefronts in our country’s evolution, so I feel a dire need for a selfless leader unlike anyone we have had in our recent history.
How do you select books to read?
There is no certain process. There are instances when I know about books from movies or from eavesdropping discussions. If I find out that they are good books then I instantly hunt them down and read them. However, I closely follow the works by my favourite authors.
Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction? Why?
I like to read non-fiction. Because, my realm of imagination mostly borders between the real and the tangible.
What is good writing for you? What would you say makes a good writer?
Good writing is simple; it may or may not be direct, but the message is always clear. Writing that is easily understandable and honest is what I call good writing. A good writer is someone who is honest about his/her craft.
How have books affected your life?
My genetics handbook has been my bible since past 4-5 years. During my journey from a novice to a professional scientist, the book has been my go to book for all troubleshooting and revisions. I owe a lot to it for where I am today.
One book that inspired you a lot and why?
Recently, I re-read The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. I am fond of socio-political commentary minus the politics. So, the book, which sheds light on the layers of class structure through subtle prose, was a key learning tool and an organic reading experience. The myriad of complicated stories and lives fused together so nonchalantly—it is a masterclass example of storytelling.
Your advice for general readers?
Read more. If you are just starting out as a reader, it may take a bit of time to really appreciate the beauty of language. Growth may be slow and imperceptible, but you will certainly be rewarded as you continue the journey.

Publishers Fine Print recently launched a children’s wing
Sep 29, 2015- Publishers Fine Print recently launched a children’s wing, Finetasy, as part of the publication’s stable. The imprint will be headed by artist and illustrator Promina Shrestha, who holds a master’s degree in Arts and Aesthetics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She also used to teach Children’s Book Illustration at Kathmandu University, Centre for Arts and Design.
“Our aim is to set a different trend in Nepali children’s literature by publishing books that parents, children and young adults will want to pick up, read and look at,” said Shrestha. “We hope that Finetasy can inspire the imaginations of young minds.”
Niraj Bhari, CEO of Fine Print, believes Finetasy will fill a void in the local market that hasn’t been targeted by other publishers. “Very few children books are being
written in Nepal, and Nepali children are growing up without reading original Nepali stories. As a result, only a few children are reading books. That’s why we felt the need for a children’s book imprint,” said Bhari.
The imprint will first publish The Journey and its Nepali translation, Yatra, by Ubahang Nembang and Sanu and the Big Storm and its Nepali translation and Sanu Ra Aandheberi, by Bandana Tulachan. These books were written/illustrated during a month-long children’s book art residency organised by Srijanalaya. “After Ubahang’s and Bandana’s books, we will publish children’s books by writers like Buddhisagar, Amar Nyaupane, etc. FineTasty will publish 12 children’s books per year,” said Shrestha.

Shortest man’s Died
The family members, however, said that one Yogendra Chhetri living in the United States told them over the phone that initiations are on to send back the body to Nepal soon.
Dangi’s nephew Dolakh, who accompanied Dangi during his trip to the US to participate in a circus and is still staying there, informed some days ago, through a social networking site, that consultations were being held with the circus company, with which Dangi worked before he died, to manage money to repatriate the body.
It has been said that long travelling-process and refusal of planes carrying passengers to ferry the body are some of the difficulties.
Dangi, a permanent resident of Dang district, was 76. He breathed his last at Lyondan B Johnson Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago while receiving treatment. He was suffering from pneumonia. Dangi set a record in Guinness World Records as world’s shortest man with a height of 54.6 cm.
As Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama engage in talks
As Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama engage in talks, China's media are bigging up "a much-anticipated fashion face-off" between the countries' two first ladies: Peng Liyuan and Michelle Obama.
The pair, dubbed "fashion icons" by the Chinese media, last met in March 2014 and their fashion styles have been widely compared in Chinese publications.

As a nationally renowned former folk singer, Chinese media have often paid attention to Ms Peng's fashion sense over the years. But given Michelle Obama's "undeniable" sense of style, the media say what both women wear "will be closely watched".
The two first ladies are expected to visit the National Zoo on Friday to look at the giant pandas.
'Fashion storm'
Much was made of Michelle Obama's sense of style during her last visit to China in March 2014. Popular news portal Sina devoted a full page to what both first ladies wore, with the headline banner: "This March, a first lady fashion storm will be blowing in. Are you ready for it?"

Many popular Chinese fashion magazines, including Self, carried images of their outfits.
The China Daily newspaper said the pair had "much in common", were "symbols of glamour" and stood "uneclipsed by their more powerful husbands".
'Goddess'

As a folk singer, Peng Liyuan was famous long before her husband came to power.
The Hong Kong daily, South China Morning Post, said recently that "her fashion style has made her a global sensation" and her fan club on popular microblog Sina Weibo - which has over a million followers - keeps a close eye on what she wears to diplomatic events.
When Ms Peng wore a striking red dress to China's 70th World War Two anniversary parade this September, a "political clothing expert" in the Hong Kong's pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao said her decision to wear a "classic Western-style dress" rather than a traditional cheongsam "sent a signal - that China is an international community not restricted to Chinese tradition".
And when she visited Seattle, thousands of netizens commented on her outfit. "Mother Peng's style has become the benchmark" said one user, generating more than 200 likes. Others said she looked like a "goddess" and her clothes were "really beautiful".
'Sartorial rematch'
As Michelle Obama is already recognised in the US for her fashion sense, China's media have started to weigh in on who will win in the fashion stakes.
Fashion magazines are eager for a sartorial rematch between the two.

The South China Morning Post has described their forthcoming meeting as a "much-anticipated fashion face-off", triggering a huge online response.
Popular Chinese website Tencent News describes Ms Peng's fashion sense as "elegant and refined" while Ms Obama's style is "undeniable", noting that she has "repeatedly been the face of American fashion magazine covers". It also highlights the fact that both women made the prestigious Vanity Fair international best dressed list in 2013.
On Friday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoyed the symbolic high point of his first state visit to the United States
On Friday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoyed the symbolic high point of his first state visit to the United States - a 21-gun salute as he stood with President Barack Obama outside the White House.
For most Americans, it was a sideshow: the main news networks were deep into their fourth straight day of blanket coverage of Pope Francis' historic U.S. visit.
Xi's U.S. trip has - at least in terms of U.S. media coverage - been firmly overshadowed by the wildly popular pontiff, raising questions over its timing and contrasting sharply with the wall-to-wall coverage of Xi by Chinese media.
China's tightly controlled state media has focused heavily on the pomp, ceremony and shows of respect Xi has been treated to in Seattle and then Washington.
The adoring domestic coverage is important for Xi, who is grappling with Chinese market instability and a flagging economy at a time when he is seeking to consolidate his grip on the leadership ahead of a crucial Communist Party congress in 2017.
On a visit to a high school in Tacoma, near Seattle, where Xi and his singer wife Peng Liyuan were serenaded by the school choir, state television showed children screaming their appreciation. A day earlier, Xi had quoted Martin Luther King and sprinkled references to U.S. pop culture into his speech to tech executives.
China has also stressed Xi's personal connection to the United States, with the Xinhua news agency carrying a video on its Facebook page - not mentioning that Facebook is blocked in China - showing him putting on a friendly face for Americans.
"From Iowa visitor to White House guest," the English-language video explains, referring to a brief 1985 visit when Xi was an animal-feed official in Hebei, Iowa's sister province.
The pope's visit to the United States, by contrast, has barely featured in the Chinese media. The Vatican has had no formal diplomatic ties to Beijing since shortly after the Communist Party took power in 1949.
Francis, the most socially progressive pope in generations, has drawn large crowds and the kind of welcome normally reserved for rock stars during his first U.S. visit, which ends in Philadelphia on Sunday. U.S. live news networks have hung on his every word and step.
ONE-SIDED MEDIA BATTLE
Talk of the pope dwarfed any attention given Xi's visit, according to data provided by MediaMiser, which tracks news and media content online, on television and radio.
From Aug. 26 to Sept. 25, tweets in the United States about Francis topped 765,000, compared to 107,000 for Xi, according to MediaMiser. Online articles from Sept. 20-24 mentioned the pope nearly four times more than Xi. On television, the pope was mentioned over 25 times more.
Francis flew out of Washington, heading to a rapturous reception in New York and a star turn at the United Nations General Assembly, just as Xi was arriving.
Under Xi, U.S.-Chinese relations are at a low, hurt by tensions over cyber theft and China's assertive moves in Asian maritime disputes.
"To be contrasted with someone who has no military, no economic might and be completely eclipsed, I think it’s astounding. I don’t think the Chinese are noticing the contrast in messages,” said Jorge Guajardo, the former Mexican ambassador to China from 2007 to 2013 who lives in Washington.
Chinese officials played down any suggestion that the pope's visit had eclipsed Xi.
"The pope's visit, we noticed that and that ... he is welcomed by the public. His visit has his own bearing here. President Xi's visit has its own bearing," said Chinese delegation spokesman Lu Kang.
Xi slid further down the U.S. news agenda on Friday morning, when Republican House of Representative Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation. The big networks quickly cut off Xi speaking at a news conference with Obama to follow a briefing by Boehner.
Chinese officials have kept security around Xi's visit particularly tight, limiting his ability to go off script and interact with the public. He left his wife Peng to fill that role in Washington, where she accompanied First Lady Michelle Obama to name a new-born panda at the Smithsonian National Zoo.
Officials in Tacoma said the security preparations had been grueling.
"We met with advance teams six or eight times over the summer," Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland said of Xi's visit to the high school.
Ming Xia, a political science professor at New York's City University who traveled to take part in an anti-Xi protest outside the White House, said the pope's humility during his visit had highlighted what he called Xi's arrogance.
"The pope was praying with the homeless and said we are all equal in the eyes of God, the real father. Xi thinks he's the father of the Chinese people - he has assumed the power of God."

A boat carrying Maldives President Abdulla Yameen
Sep 28, 2015- A boat carrying Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on his return from the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia has been hit by an on-board explosion.
The cause was not immediately known.
Mr Yameen was uninjured but cabinet minister Mohamed Shareef told the BBC that the first lady,
Fathimath Ibrahim, and two others were hurt by the "relatively large blast".
The explosion hit as the boat ferrying Mr Yameen and his entourage from the airport docked in the capital, Male.
Mr Shareef told the BBC that the blast could be heard "many hundreds of feet away".
Besides Ms Ibrahim, one of Mr Yameen's security officials and one of Mr Shareef's protocol staff were injured.
"(The police) have not ruled anything out yet. They're doing a thorough investigation here locally and we're not certain at the moment whether it's an accident or a deliberate attempt on the president's life," he said.

Big three parties have formed a three-member committee
Sep 28, 2015- Big three parties have formed a three-member committee to hold dialogues with the parties and groups agitating against the new constitution.
Nepali Congress leader and Forest Minister Mahesh Acharya, UML Chief whip Agni Kharel are named in the committee. The third member, to be named from UCPN (Maoist), has not been decided yet.
A senior leaders meeting at PM’s office in Baluwatar today formed the committee.
UML leader Jhala Nath Khanal said that the committee was formed to gather further details about the reservations expressed by the agitating groups and parties regarding the constitution and address them. “We have not been able to identify the demands or the problems they have with the new constitution. This committee will address those reservations,” he said emerging from the meet.
NC senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba hoped the committee will fulfil its mandate of holding talks and resolving the current volatile situation of the country.

The Tharu Lawmakers’ Unified Struggle Committee (TLUSC)
Sep 29, 2015- The Tharu Lawmakers’ Unified Struggle Committee (TLUSC) has decided to initiate dialogue with other agitating groups including Madhesi forces to press the government to address the concerns of the Tharu community through amendment to the new constitution.
A meeting of Tharu leaders held in Dang stressed the need for better coordination and working alliance with other groups to take the protest to its logical end. Tharu leaders including Gopal Dahit, Janakraj Chaudhary and Manbahadur Tharu were present in the meeting. Some leaders, however, opposed
the idea of forging an alliance with the Madhes-based parties.
“The programme of protest will continue unless our legitimate demands are addressed through an amendment proposal after the House session starts,” reads a TLUSC statement issued after the meeting.
It would be the first such alliance between the two largest communities in the plains whose relations had soured due to the Tarai parties’ one Madhes province agenda. Madhesi parties now support the demand for a separate Tharuhat/Tharuwan province while the Tharus have acknowledged many demands of the Madhes-based parties, including extension of Province 2 further east.
TLUSC’s decision came after Madhesi leaders approached Tharu leaders to forge a working alliance. Earlier this week, Madhesi parties had also reached
an understanding to form an alliance.
“We are open to collaboration with any community that supports our demands. If the Madhesis back our demand, we are ready to form an alliance,” said Raj Kumar Lekhi, former chairman of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities. Madhes-based parties have already extended their support to the Tharus’ demand for a Tharuhat province comprising Tarai districts west of Nawalparasi to Kanchanpur. Another reason for the willingness to collaborate is a poor turnout in protests in recent weeks.
Moreover, the government has arrested more than 50 Tharu leaders including Dhani Ram Chaudhary, chairman of the Tharu Kalyankari Sabha, and Laxman Tharu.

China celebrate 70 years anniversary of ww2

Nepal China Border

Despite the mild weather, bronchiolitis, raging each winter by epidemic, is there. This viral infection of the small bronchi affects particularly three regions. Precautions to take to prevent your child a new episode.
Bronchiolitis is present throughout the french territory, with a peak of the outbreak already crossed in Ile-de-France, in the North, and in the Languedoc-Roussillon, according to the latest Bulletin of monitoring of national Institut de veille sanitaire (InVs).
Our advice and hygiene care to reduce the risk of contamination of your baby with these viruses of bronchiolitis, including respiratory syncytial (RSV).
Be especially careful if one of your family members is cold. RSV is spread mainly through coughing, sneezing, as well as the hands and contaminated objects.
Wash hands regularly
Wash your hands with water and SOAP before and after you be occupied by your child. The hands are the main vector of viral contamination.
Simply shake the hand of a cold person or touching a phone stained to be carrier in turn of the virus on his hands. Bronchiolitis virus persists six hours on objects such as toys, door handles… By washing hands regularly, for at least 30 seconds, you eliminate 90% of germs. The remaining 10% are destroyed at drying.
Out of the House, slide a water-alcohol solution into your bag (make sure it is well in line with European standards of efficiency against bacteria): you will use it, for example, before giving to baby his bottle or bag lunch.
Other measures to limit the spread of the virus: regularly clean the objects with which your baby comes into contact (bottles, teats, games…).
